Sophia’s Well of Wisdom Announces
A Course in Miracles Study Group to Begin August 31
Local author Helen Bonner will facilitate a weekly study of A Course In Miracles, beginning on Tuesday, August 31st at 7:00 pm. Rev. Patsy Walker Fine, minister at the interfaith spiritual center says, “We are fortunate to have an experienced teacher like Helen Bonner with us. ACIM has proven to be one of the most effective programs for fostering spiritual growth, which then impacts the quality of one’s life.”
Dr. Bonner began studying A Course In Miracles in l982, shortly after the Text and Workbook were published, and since that time has facilitated study groups in Los Angeles, Minnesota, Bishop and Jackson. Subtitled: A Foundation for Inner Peace, ACIM is not a handbook for performing instant miracles, she says, but a step by step study of how we can bring peace and tranquility into our minds, and thus into our lives.
ACIM has it’s roots in the Biblical sayings of Jesus, going further to show how our own thinking creates problems for ourselves, and how to change that thinking. “Over time, ACIM changes lives. I can testify to that with my own life, and the lives of many of my student/teachers,” Bonner says.
Before going to college, Helen Bonner was a wife and mother, a secretary and news reporter in the Placerville area. In the ’70’s, she taught in Community Colleges in California and Texas, then got a PhD at Ohio University in 1980 and became a full professor at Minnesota State University, where she taught, among other things, World Literature. “Thats where I began to see that all great religions teach the same thing — God is Love, Love your neighbor as Yourself, Help those Less Fortunate. Trust. Be grateful. Forgive as you are forgiven. — But we all find it difficult to practice those simple precepts. The support of a caring spiritual group built around ACIM helps.”
Bonner’s last two books, First Love Last, a memoir, and Cry Dance, Literary Fiction, are based on ACIM’s principles. “Too much of our culture focuses on fighting with others, revenge, conquest, or the opposite — romantic fantasies of a perfect life with no effort on our part,” she says. “We need all the help we can get to counteract those unhealthy influences and lead happier lives. Those are the miracles ACIM offers.” |
