Bring the kids to the Sutter Creek Farmers’ Market, Saturday, August 14
First 5 Amador will be hosting an event this Saturday that includes introducing children to the Farmers’ Market. The event is called “Dad & Me”, and is a morning of fun activities for children 0-5 years old and a male member of their family. Participating children will be able to take home the book “Eating the Alphabet,” enjoy taste-testing healthy snacks, and shop at the market with the “Amador Bucks” they will receive. The families will then move on to the park across the creek for kite-flying. “Dad & Me” activities run from 10 am to noon, but children are welcome throughout the whole market time of 8 to11 am to receive shopping dollars and interact with the vendors. The First 5 event is free, but space is limited; anyone wanting to participate should call 257-1092.
Jackson Farmers’ Market, Sunday, August 15, Guest Chef, Susan Komure, 10:30 a.m. Creative Cooking Demonstration
This Sunday’s featured salad chef at the Jackson Farmers’ Market is Susan Komure. Susan lives in Mokelumne Hill with her husband (and winner of the Creative Zucchini category in the Great Zucchini Contest) Rod Hanchett. In addition to being a therapist, mother and grandmother, Susan is a wonderful supporter of the market. She understands the meaning of a community sharing food and fun together. She has honed her culinary arts skills through membership in a local food and travel club. The vendors of the Jackson Farmers’ Market thank Susan for her support and culinary talents.
THE RECIPE: NIGELLA’S WATERMELON SALAD
When asked about the recipe she will be preparing, Susan said, “ I love watermelon, but wondered what other things can you do with this BIG melon without wasting it. A meal with a close friend introduced me to this thirst quenching salad. I searched for the recipe and found it on Nigella’s [Lawson] website. I love eating watermelon on its own, but this is the perfect way to experience a new method of food preparation and taste. I hope you all enjoy it.”
Upcoming Events at the Farmers’ Markets
The markets’ monthly fruit bakeoffs will be taking place in Pine Grove on Wednesday, August 18, at 4:00 pm, and in Sutter Creek on Saturday, August 21, at 9:00 am. This month, the bakers will be using succulent peaches in their entries. Anyone interested in participating in the bakeoffs should contact the market manager at 419-2503, and have their entry at the market before the judging time.
